A new branch for me in a familiar region! My first steps into the mushroom sector, full of anticipation and a little unsure, introduced me to a dynamic sector that is a force to be reckoned with in the global arena. The strong local presence of mushrooms is well known, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that 80% of mushroom production worldwide utilises the expertise, know-how and technology of the mushroom sector in this region.
Driven by the experimental station and the professional training centre, a strong periphery has been built up on the foundations of the primary sector in Horst and its surroundings. This satellite of agri-businesses encompasses the entire supply chain. As project manager of Mushroom Valley, the past months have introduced me to our partners and I can sum up the experience in a single sentence: “Passion for mushrooms and doing business!” The many tips, suggestions, recommendations and expectations I have received from the stakeholders in Mushroom Valley reflect the enthusiasm and willingness to make a success of this initiative together. I am pleased to accept this challenge by combining all these insights and defining common goals we can develop further. Our organisational structure is now in place, our website is operational and we can start working constructively on the input provided by our partners. On 21 September, we will organise a presentation and debate during the Kick Off in the Mushroom Pavilion at Museum de Locht, a location where the sector's rich history is tangible and visible. Where the past is inextricably linked to the successful future ahead!
